The national aim to achieve universal access to drinking water must be implemented at the regional level. This can only be done through well-calibrated planning in the form of master plans. And we've been able to take this work to scale, extending master plans to 87 districts with the support of IRC through the financing of the European Union.

To reach the sustainable development goals by 2030 for water, sanitation and hygiene targets, Burkina Faso requires strong governance systems. Unfortunately, the ambitions set by the government are hampered due to a constant deteriorating security situation, limited political support and adequate public finance.
On a positive note, the Head of State and the First Lady are prioritizing the water and sanitation agenda. The Ministry of Water and Sanitation have designed a strong national investment plan for strengthening the water and sanitation sector and IRC and partner are making good progress in the implementation of the WASH master plans in the partner districts Banfora and Tenkodogo.
Through our work in our partner districts we are reaching 352,000 people. Our district work serves as a model to reach every district in Burkina Faso. The European Union is supporting us to together with ONEA to adopt elements of the district approach in 93 additional communes, and to develop full master plans.
