The East and Southern Africa Action Exchange on Unclogging the Blockages in Sanitation, organised by IRC, PSI, Water for People and WSUP Enterprises, took place on February 18-20, 2014, Kampala, Uganda. The event was an optimal occasion for sanitation professionals to explore how to achieve better and faster results of public and private sector sanitation service delivery.

It was definitely a successful conference, in terms of bringing together like-minded organisations from both the north and south.

Part of this was learning what others are doing and what they see and understand are the major barriers to move forward, and also to see how it may be possible to work more effectively together towards developing innovative ways that integrate community and market approaches, and that branch across sectors and organisations. A total of 150 participants attended from various countries, especially within Africa.

The conference report based on this event is currently being put together. Regarding the background paper, it was decided to ask each of the theme leaders to put together a two-page paper. The thematic groups included: public sector issues; business models around sustainable sanitation; technology issues; demand creation and behaviour change issues; and inter-sectoral links. This was definitely a successful conference, in terms of bringing together like-minded organisations from both the north and south. Currently we are putting together an edition for Waterlines based on this conference around the potential linkage between the public and private sector in sanitation.
