Abstract	This paper describes how the programme to improve hygiene knowledge and practice was designed and implemented. It provides information on impact derived from an assessment. Community participation in the decision making processes was crucial for designing the hygiene promotion programme. The study showed that continuous community hygiene education along with physical access to water supply and sanitation positively influences change in hygiene behaviours. For example, 54% of the families were observed to wash their hands with soap before eating versus 8% in the baseline study. 90% had knowledge of this practice versus 30% at the baseline.
