Abstract

In Indonesia each year more than 50,000 children under five die from diarrhoea-related diseases. Handwashing with soap effectively reduces diarrhoeal diseases and respiratory infections in children. While handwashing has been promoted in Indonesia for the past 20 years, these efforts have been uncoordinated and unevenly spread across the archipelago, with a population of almost 240 million.
