TAF SystemWater and sanitation will last longer if the sound technology is chosen for the specific context. The TAF tells the community and the supporting organisation if the desired technology will give what people expect and can afford. Technology is all about money, management, regulation, social relationships, environment and more.

The Technology Applicability Framework (TAF) is a decision support tool on the applicability, scalability and sustainability of a specific WASH technology to provide lasting services in a specific context and on the readiness for its introduction.

The TAF can be used to

  • start discussion, documentation and sharing experiences about a WASH technology and approaches to scale up this technology,
  • assess the potential of a new specific WASH technology with respect to applicability, scalability, sustainability and uptake for a given country,
  • assess readiness of a sector to scale up this technology including identification of potential measures for improving uptake,
  • assess the potential of an existing WASH technology with respect to applicability, scalability, sustainability and uptake for a given geographical area with its specific context (e.g. district),
  • assess readiness of the sector to scale up this technology including identification of obstacles to be addressed to make the technology help to get a lasting WASH service,
  • monitor performance of specific WASH technologies and their introduction process in a given geographical area,
  • appraise pre-selected WASH technologies in a programme or project on its promise.
