IRC's approach is based on working intensively in countries over extended periods of time to drive deep and long-lasting change that results in the delivery of sustainable water, sanitation and hygiene services. IRC, together with partners has developed tools to monitor the change and embed them within local and national processes.

Over the next two days IRC will share a series of exciting tools for monitoring change during the 2014 WASH Sustainability Forum:

Multilingual tools to collect, analyse, and use life-cycle costs of water and sanitation services

The first step towards delivering sustainable services is to know the actual expenditure required to reach everyone forever. Life-cycle costing data is critical for identifying and addressing equity issues, affordability, financial sustainability and developing appropriate service delivery models.

Over the course of six years, IRC has developed and tested the use of life-cycle costing and related tools at the request of different governments and organisations. These tools have been successfully applied to learn about life-cycle costs and used to make decisions. Do the math and make it last!

Agent based modelling and simulation

IRC, together with TU Delft, has developed two agent based models for exploration of policy and implementation issues related to the delivery of sustainable rural water services delivery. Both models represent rural water service delivery areas, one in the context of Uganda and the other a generic rural setting.

WASH Info : real‐time monitoring with built‐in statistical analysis

IRC, together with BeDataDriven and BRAC, have developed WASH Info in 2014, an open source monitoring system that provides quantitative and qualitative data to guide decision making and planning in the BRAC WASH programme in Bangladesh

Analysis of large scale surveys and life-cycle costs data requires skilled staff, time and sophisticated software. WASH Info carries out analysis in real time and is cost-effective.

IRC's Ingeborg Krukkert and Kristof Bostoen and Claire Barnhoorn from BeDataDriven are present at the forum for any questions regarding WASH Info - Download the four pager below

Other tools

  • Amelie Dube and Melanie Carrasco are presenting the Methodology or Assessing Cost Effectiveness of Hygiene interventions
  • Jo Smet will present on behalf of WASHTech the Technology Applicability Framework
  • Kristof Bostoen will present, on behalf of the Dutch WASH Alliance the Sustainability Monitoring Framework (SMF) and its Sustainability Index (SI)
