Participatory Hygiene and Sanitation Transformation (PHAST) uses a sequence of participatory steps, methods and tools to enable communities to assess their own risks and plan, organize for and monitor their own improvements. As with Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS), the quality is heavily dependent on the quality of the facilitators and their training and support. It is possible to tailor methods and duration to local conditions. This was done for example in Eritrea, Ghana and Somalia.
